I thought I would start this back up and refocus it a bit more towards wine. Lately, I have been getting into regions and wines that are a bit off the proverbial path. Our trip to the Loire really just strengthened my love for affordable, crisp, mineral, terroir driven whites (or reds for that matter...). Kerrie and I recently went to Tavolino where I came across a great example of such a wine - it was the 2004 Cantina di Gallura Vermentino di Gallura "Canayli". I thought it might be a bit old, but this wine was still incredibly fresh and vibrant. Vermentino is a grape thought to be indigenous to southern Spain that is now mainly planted in Spain and Italy. I have not tried as much Vermentino as I would have liked, but the Sardegnia reportedly produces among the best. This wine was from the Sardignian DOCG region of Vermentino di Gallura. This wine was fresh, clean, and had such intense minerality, it tickled your tongue. It was amazing with my fish and exactly the type of wine I wish I could find more often on restaurant wine lists. It was about 30 bucks and was worth every penny.
